The Voluntary Sector Support Unit (VSSU) at CCS has successfully recruited people willing to act as Independent Examiners for Charity Accounts. These suitably qualified professionals are interested in community involvement, in a time-limited capacity.
The Charities Act 1993 may require charities with an annual income between £10,000 and £250,000 to have their accounts Independently examined. The Independent Examiner is an independent person who is able to carry out a competent examination of the accounts. Independent Examiners must be familiar with accountancy methods, but do not have to be practising accountants.
It is not always easy for charities to find someone suitable. Which is why the VSSU has identified and met with potential examiners and provided them with the Charity Commission guidelines. We currently have examiners in areas of the county (excluding Telford and Wrekin).The VSSU will also be working with Examiners giving them support, information and networking, and training opportunities.
The VSSU would like to create a network of Independent Examiners in Shropshire. We would like to hear from Examiners, those charging fees, or volunteers, so that we can share experience and exchange ideas.
There is some scope for the same group of people to act as Financial Mentors for small charities. Once assigned to a charity, the Mentor will be able to work with the Treasurer and paid staff to advise on financial systems and procedures.
When you contact VSSU we make the arrangements for an Independent Examiner that is available to contact you. We do not send out a list of names as many are working and have other commitments.
Most people available through our service are seeking a time-limited role. It may not be appropriate to consider approaching them to join your committee, become treasurer, or take on additional work.
Your organisation will arrange with the Examiner to meet travel expenses. Some may also charge a small fee, while others will operate purely as volunteers.
